Patterns by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin


Patterns of History is a series of vintage patterns precision drafted from original 19th Century garments in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin's costume and textiles collection.  Each pattern comes complete with a set of Period Notes describing the fabric, colors, hair and hat styles, accessories, and fashion trends of the garment's era.  In addition, directions are given for any required undergarments such as hoops or petticoats.  Patterns from the original series of 1976 remain available only in sizes 10 or 14 as shown; patterns which have been redrafted and updated are shown with size S or L.  For women, size Small contains 8-10-12; Large contains 14-16-18; for Men, Small is 34-36-38; Large is 40-44-46.

1835 Afternoon Dress
This dress is constructed in the large sleeved style of the 1830's known as "gigot". The full, ankle-length skirt is attached to a separate high-waisted bodice with hooks and eyes. Like the bodice and skit, the pelerine cape collar is also detachable. The original costume is of brown watered silk and was worn over full petticoats.

1840 Day Dress
This simple day dress has the narrow sleeves and "Marie Stuart" waist popular during the entire decade. pleating at the waist gives the skin its soft, rounded shape, which can be further accentuated by wearing gathered petticoats. Keeping with 1840's tradition, this dress should be made up in the same way whether in cotton or in silk. No elaborate trimmings should be used. Our dress is based on an original made of cotton furniture check in green and brown on cream.

1857 Afternon Dress
Worn over a full, round hoop skirt, this afternoon costume evokes memories of a Scarlet O'Hara pre-Civil War dress. The longwaisted dress sports the wide pagoda sleeves popular during the 1850s. The original moire-striped silk taffeta gown with silk fringe was worn to the inaugniral address of President James Buchanan by a young Wisconsin woman.

1865 Dress and
Paletot Jacket

Originally a wedding dress of a cream-white silk and wool blend trimmed with black lace and velvet ribbon, this three-piece set is to be worn over a full oval hoop. The short-waistod bodice is a perfect example of 1860s style, as is the full skin, which is at its largest for the nineteenth century. The loose-fitting paletote jacket, a fashion popular throughout the period, adds the finishing touch.

1893 Basic Dress
Representing one of the most popular fashions of the 1890s, this dress features full bishop sleeves with raffled cuffs in contrast fabric. The delicately shirred high neckline and attached caplet completes the proper Victorian look. The original dress is of shadow-printed cream wool grenadine with purple silk trim. (Size 12 is not available)

1896 Walking Suit
The indispensable "tailor suit" for the active Victorian woman, out walking suit sports the enormous "leg-o-mutton" sleeve of the late 1890s. Cut to mid-calf and worn with gaiters, this is a perfect period bicycling costume. This suit can also be made up into an elegant Victorian wedding gown. The jacket and mock bodice from are one piece, but provide the look of two separate pieces. While the original is of navy blue wool broadcloth with a woven patterned brown silk bodice from and collar, the suit can be made up in lighter summer fabrics such as white duck and pique.

1888 Reception Toilette

The classic elements of the late 1880 silhouette, including a tailored bodice, tight sleeves, off-the-floor skin, and prominent bustle, are all seen in this elegant two piece dress. The original of gray silk faille with whito silk neck inset and gold braid was made by an 18-year old Wisconsin woman who wore it as her wedding dress. The pattern includes instructions on how to make a simple 1880s bustle and illustrations of the dress' matching hat.

1873 Bustle

The perfect accompanimem for our 1876 dress, this long, narrow bustle shape was used to define skin lines during the better pan of the 1870s. Many bustles were factory-made, but this is one of the few styles that maybe easily reproduced by a home sewer. To maintain the correct shape, add a light cushion. All Sizes.
